GenAI Showdown: ByteDance’s Aggressive Pricing Sparks Price War in China’s AI Market

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has commercially launched a suite of large language models (LLMs) capable of generating human-like language processing capabilities. This marks a significant milestone in the development of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technology, which has far-reaching implications for various industries.

The Doubao LLM family comprises at least eight variants, including the top-tier Doubao Pro, which can process up to 128,000 tokens, as well as the entry-level Doubao Lite and specialized versions for audio recognition and virtual character creation. This diversified range of models demonstrates ByteDance’s commitment to addressing the diverse needs of its customers.

In contrast, Baidu’s Ernie LLM and Alibaba Group Holding’s Tongyi Qianwen charge 0.12 yuan per 1,000-token prompt, underscoring the competitive landscape in the LLM market. The latter’s adoption by over 90,000 corporate clients across various industries further emphasizes the growing demand for AI-powered solutions.

LLMs, trained on vast datasets, are revolutionizing GenAI applications such as chatbots, virtual assistants, and advanced content-generating tools. The proliferation of LLMs has enabled the development of sophisticated AI models capable of generating content, including audio, code, images, text, simulations, and videos.

As of January, more than 40 government-approved LLMs and related AI applications have been deployed on the mainland. However, the current market has over 200 China-developed LLMs, which may lead to increased competition and potentially trigger a price war.

ByteDance has been testing its Doubao LLM family internally and with select partners for approximately a year, according to Volcano Engine’s Tan. The company has also announced other AI-related initiatives, including an enterprise version of its Coze platform and strategic partnerships with Samsung Electronics, Xiaomi, Honor, Geely, and Great Wall Motor.

The heightened focus on AI reflects ByteDance’s “all-in” approach to competing in this sector, a battle that the company believes it cannot afford to lose. With over 26 million monthly active users on its Doubao app, ByteDance is poised to expand its presence in the AI market.

However, ByteDance still lags behind in the mainland’s LLM market segment, where Alibaba’s Tongyi Qianwen has already gained significant traction. The global AI market remains highly competitive, with OpenAI’s recent announcement of its GPT-4o model, capable of realistic voice conversation and cross-media interaction, serving as a testament to the ongoing struggle for dominance in AI technology.
